Dr. Luiz Amaral, CEO of the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), has announced his resignation, effective at the end of July 2024. The decision comes amid backlash over proposed changes to the use of carbon credits for Scope 3 emissions.
Citing personal reasons, Dr. Amaral stated, “These issues require my full attention at this time, prompting my decision to step down.” The SBTi has appointed current Chief Legal Officer Susan Jenny Ehr as interim CEO and will begin the search for a permanent successor.
The controversy stems from SBTi’s plan to allow companies to use carbon credits to offset emissions from their supply chains, known as Scope 3. This proposal has faced criticism from entities including H&M Group, climate charity WWF, and some SBTi staff members.
SBTi reiterated that its Corporate Net-Zero Standard remains unchanged until the completion of its Standard Operating Procedure for revisions. The organization plans to publish drafted standards by the end of 2024 and has invited stakeholders to participate in the consultation process.
