In what is seen as fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bangladesh’s manufacturing activity fell by around 28.78 per cent in April in comparison with the previous month.
Meanwhile, as per Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics’ (BBS), Quantum Index of medium and large-scale manufacturing industries, mining and electricity, manufacturing activity in the country dropped 25.57 per cent in April from a year earlier.
The slump is consequent to the countrywide shutdown implemented by the Government to arrest the spread of coronavirus that resulted in manufacturing activity coming to a halt.
As a result of the same, the general manufacturing production index dropped to 282.60 in April from 396.85 in March this year.
As per reports, production of knitwear and woven garments along with iron and steel, fertiliser and cement were significantly lower in April compared to the same period a year earlier with knitwear production falling by 85.87 per cent, while production of woven apparels contracted by 84.39 per cent.
In the first full month of the lockdown, knitwear manufacturing fell by 81.89 per cent, while production of woven garment dwindled 82.79 per cent, claimed the report.
