Woolmark is launching a new Recycled Wool standard in honour of its 60th anniversary, marking the first time the mark has been applied to recycled fibre.
With Woolmark (100 per cent pure new wool), Woolmark Blend (50 per cent-99.9 per cent new wool), and Wool Blend (30 per cent-49.9 per cent new wool), it becomes a part of the larger Woolmark Certification Programme.
The Woolmark firm’s Certification Programme is the industry benchmark for wool quality. The introduction of the Recycled Wool sub-brand under the new RW-1 specification, according to the firm, “marks a significant step towards a more sustainable textile industry.”
“Wool is the most recycled apparel fibre globally,” said its MD John Roberts. “Our new Recycled Wool mark supports the shift from a linear to a circular production model, reducing waste and pollution.”
The updated specification guarantees that products fulfil the quality standards of The Woolmark Certification Programme and contain at least 20 per cent recycled wool.
Recycled wool can be found in products from both pre- and post-consumer sources, such as fabric cutting waste and clothing, that have been verified by standards like the Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) and Global Recycled Standard (GRS).
