At a textile factory in Ahmedabad’s Narol neighbourhood, workers inhaled hazardous gases that resulted in the deaths of two and the hospitalisation of seven, according to authorities. At least two patients were brought to the city’s L G Hospital in critical condition.
According to police officials, the incident happened at a textile factory in the Naroda industrial district while an acid transfer from a tanker to a tank within the factory was in progress.
According to an Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) official, they received a report about the incident at approximately 10.45 a.m. “Our team isolated (barricaded) the storage of sulphuric acid, caustic soda, and bleaching material after arriving at the location. We also moved workers to the hospital and conducted a search and rescue operation at the factory,” an official stated.
The AFES spokesman said that in order to avoid casualties, they also evacuated residents from the surrounding industrial units.
“Technically, nine people suffered serious respiratory injuries as a result of inhaling poisonous gases. First aid was administered on the scene to 15 people with the assistance of 108 (ambulance). Four of the nine individuals who were sent to the hospital were critical,” the official continued.
Narol Police Inspector P C Desai stated, “The incident has resulted in the deaths of two people and the treatment of seven others. Two of them have been admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The event took place in the facility while moving acid from a tanker to a tank. The matter is being investigated.”
Multiple Government agencies, including the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, Forensics Science Laboratory, and Factory Inspector, were reportedly involved in the investigation on a number of topics, including whether or not the factory had all the required permits.
