
Renowned economist Dr. Ahsan H Mansur took charge as the 13th Governor of Bangladesh Bank with notification being issued on Tuesday night. He has succeeded Abdur Rauf Talukdar who resigned on 10th August.
Ahsan H. Mansur must resign from public service and sever all affiliations to other organisations and associations to be appointed governor of the central bank, per the regulations.
The Bangladesh Bank (Amendment) Act, 2020 states that the government appoints a governor and holds office for four years, or until they turn sixty-seven.
However, the age limit for the post of governor of the Bangladesh Bank is likely to be removed soon, high-level sources of the financial institution division informed local media.
Throughout his extensive tenure at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Dr. Mansur conducted assignments in countries in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Central America.
He worked in important functional departments (Fiscal Affairs and Policy Review and Development departments) and area departments (Middle East and Central Asia and Asian departments) of the IMF.
He also served as the IMF Senior Resident Representative to Pakistan from 1998-2001 and as the fiscal adviser to the Minister of Finance, Government of Bangladesh (1989-91).
Dr. Mansur joined the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh as its founder director and executive director after leaving the IMF early in order to work with other professionals to develop an institute dedicated to policy analysis.
