Over the past 40 years, the growth of the RMG industry in Bangladesh has triggered a social change by generating considerable formal employment opportunities for women. The industry has made women visible in the labour market and empowered in society. However, in recent years, the proportion of women workers in the sector has been on the decline.
To find out the reasons or to present a clear picture, Apparel Resources conducted a survey. It has revealed some interesting findings. We are hopeful that the findings will help the RMG companies identify the reasons, and, if considered, could help them address some of the major concerns.
Why are women leaving the RMG industry?
To prevent women from leaving, the industry should focus on various fronts. Nearly half of the respondents feel that measures are required to retain women in the industry. The overall focus should be on reducing work pressure and working hours and revising the wages they are paid.
What does the industry need to do to retain female workers?
The majority of the respondents shared that the promotion of women workers is a major solution to retaining female workers. Evidently, it is a well-accepted fact that women are better in supervisory roles. Factories with more women at the worker level as well as supervisory roles, have a better atmosphere, are better disciplined and enjoy higher productivity.
Why has the industry produced very few female entrepreneurs?
Despite the continuous growth of the RMG industry, it has produced very few female entrepreneurs over the years. Respondents strongly believe that the biggest reason is cultural, as they find men not being supportive. This calls for a huge social outlook change. Lack of access to capital and better opportunities in other sectors are also areas where attention is needed.
Do you see a significant rise in female entrepreneurship in 10 years?
Despite the challenges and drawbacks, it has been found that people are optimistic that the Bangladesh RMG industry is sure to produce more female entrepreneurs. This paints a highly positive picture.
