Snapdeal, a leading value-focused e-commerce platform, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Digital India Bhashini, an Independent Business Division established by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) within Digital India Corporation (DIC), to develop services and products focused on enhancing language translation efforts to promote digital inclusion in India. The MOU was signed between Bharat Venishetti at Snapdeal and Amitabh Nag, CEO of Bhashini.
Underscoring the dedication to tackle the heterogeneous linguistic terrain of India and ensuring universal access to digital services, this partnership will utilise artificial intelligence (AI) to craft inventive resolutions supporting more than nine regional languages. This would make goods like clothing more affordable and allow sites like Snapdeal to serve a wider customer base in India, particularly in rural areas.
Himanshu Chakrawarti, CEO – Snapdeal expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to embark on this strategic partnership with Bhashini. We look forward to combining Bhashini’s deep expertise in language solutions with Snapdeal’s robust e-commerce platform to empower individuals across diverse linguistic backgrounds. This initiative aligns seamlessly with our mission to enhance accessibility and affordability in online shopping, particularly in Tier 3 cities and beyond.”
Amitabh Nag, CEO of Bhashini, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Our partnership with Snapdeal marks a significant milestone in our mission to promote linguistic diversity and digital accessibility. We are committed to leveraging technology for the greater good and enabling inclusive digital experiences for all. Through innovative use of AI and voice-first technology, we are determined to break down barriers, build greater digital participation, and create a more connected and inclusive digital ecosystem for all Indians.”
More than 86 per cent of Snapdeal’s orders originate from outside metro cities, with over 72 per cent of buyers hailing from smaller cities and towns. Nearly 95 per cent of the products on Snapdeal are priced below Rs. 1000, including most apparel choices.
