Throughout history, the allure of florals in fashion has been enduring. Rooted in the belief of spiritual significance by Indian philosophers and with historical traces dating back to Ancient Greece and Rome, flowers have maintained their charm through centuries. Over time, florals evolved from mere adornments to powerful symbols of romance and whimsy, particularly prevalent during the Spring/Summer seasons.
However, as fashion trends move towards versatility, trans-seasonality and longevity, designers and high fashion brands have increasingly turned to 3D florals to create timeless pieces suitable for any season. Be it via intricate embellishments, appliqué work, beaded surfaces or creative cut-out renditions, the use of 3D florals has surpassed seasonal constraints, pointing towards the many tricks designers have up their sleeve when it comes to showcasing this evergreen trend.
More recently, the trend gained momentum during the S/S ’23 season and continued to inspire designers through F/W ’23 and S/S ’24. The use of 3D floral embellishments and appliqués have emerged as standout statements, not only adding an extra layer of design element to a garment, but also elevating everyday looks from drab to fab.
For S/S ’24, AKNAS wowed the audience with a pink blouse adorned with 3D roses on the shoulders, paired elegantly with a midi-length skirt showcasing fringed layers in a palette of pink, blue and dark red. Meanwhile, Balmain left an indelible impression with a pale blue leather ruched mini dress, adorned with red patent roses at the neckline and hem. Christian Cowan brought forth a vision of glamour with a pink sequined strapless mini dress skillfully fashioned in the form of a rose, showcasing his mastery of both fashion and artistry. On the other hand, David Koma presented a purple halter-neck dress in sheer fabric, featuring 3D petals made from resin.
Marni made a bold statement with a strapless top and matching skirt crafted from overlapping fabric cut-out florals, creating a visually arresting and standout aesthetic, whilst Simone Rocha, in a whimsical twist, enchanted us with a sheer below-the-knee dress adorned with pink long stem roses, transporting onlookers to a dreamy and fantastical realm.
