
Japan experienced a downfall in its apparel imports during January to April 2018 period. Volumes fell by 0.30 per cent despite witnessing surge from its major sourcing destinations Bangladesh, India and Vietnam.
In value-terms, Japan was marginally up by 0.17 per cent as it imported apparels worth US $ 8.64 billion as against US $ 8.62 billion in the same period last year.
Of all major exporting countries, China continued to show slowdown in the Japanese market as it fell by 4.21 per cent in volumes and 5.61 per cent in values. Vietnam jumped both in volumes and values by 16.82 per cent and 13.38 per cent respectively and shipped apparels worth US $ 1.15 billion to Japan in the review period.
While Vietnam is increasing its share in the Japanese market, Bangladesh is making headlines as it’s too emerging in its exports to Japan, gradually if not rapidly. Bangladesh exported apparels US $ 363.44 million in the said period posting 10.54 per cent growth. In volume-terms, the country noted escalation by 13.88 per cent on the yearly note.
On the other hand, India, in its apparel exports to Japan, recovered in April after facing a downfall in the first quarter. Cumulatively, India was up by 7.22 per cent in its apparel shipment values earning US $ 117 million. While, the country got a boost of 5.26 per cent in the volume of apparel export in the Japanese market.
