Close on heels of recent reports that Vietnam has taken over Bangladesh as the second largest apparel exporter globally, media reports, which cited officials from the apex garment makers body of Bangladesh-the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), have claimed that the country is still the second largest exporter of apparels items in the world.
According to the report, if textile is excluded and export earnings from apparels are only considered (between January and July), Bangladesh is ahead of Vietnam.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, BGMEA Vice-President Arshad Jamal Dipu reportedly maintained that if the textile export value can somehow be excluded from Vietnam’s textile and clothing export, Bangladesh would remain the second, while adding further that there is no official and authentic data available which could prove that Vietnam has been able to overtake Bangladesh to become the second largest apparel exporter in the world.
We will have to wait until July 2021 for the WTO data for 2020 reportedly stated the BGMEA VP underlining that as we are still in the middle of 2020, will have to wait till July next year for the official WTO figures that could put the debate as to who is the biggest apparel exporter globally, to rest.
